Mold Remediation

Mold remediation is often required following a water intrusion event whether from a minor leaky water pipe to a major flood event. While each event is unique, mold remediation typically involves the physical removal of moldy building materials, such as drywall, studs, and joists, and the cleaning of surfaces that cannot be easily removed.

Benefits of Mold Remediation

icon4
Improves Indoor Air Quality

Assuming that visible mold is present in your facility, understanding the extent of the impacted area and having it remediated can significantly reduce airborne mold spores and improve air quality.

icon1
Mitigates Spread Prevention

Mold loves dark, damp spaces and spreads via spores to other food sources in the area like drywall, wooden studs, etc. Remediating the mold prevents the continued spreading.

icon6
Increases Value

Visible mold impacts property values and can cause real estate transaction delays. Addressing mold early can have a significant impact on current and future property values.

How Mold Remediation Works

The setup for mold remediation is similar to that of an asbestos or lead abatement project in that the impacted area is sealed off, critical barriers are installed and a negative pressure is applied to protect the workers. Most porous materials like drywall, ceiling tile, 2×4 studs, etc. are removed and disposed of versus an attempt at cleaning them. Materials that cannot be easily removed such as concrete or structural components are cleaned with a microbial agent

Mold Remediation FAQ

  • The EPA does not recommend using chlorine bleach to remediate mold. It’s best to use detergent and water, but most importantly to control moisture in the area once cleaned.

  • First, you need to protect yourself and others from being exposed when disturbing mold. Hard surfaces like concrete can be scrubbed with a detergent and water, allowing the area to dry completely. Porous materials like carpet, wood, and ceiling tiles may need to be tossed out, as cleaning them can be inefficient, ineffective, and expensive.

  • Painting or caulking over moldy surfaces is not advised. It’s best to thoroughly clean the moldy material with detergent and water and then let the area dry completely. Once dried out, it’s OK to paint and/or caulk the area.
