Aboveground Storage Tank (AST) Installation & Removal

TEC has decades of experience designing and installing aboveground storage tank systems. Our certified installers will professionally install your AST or a system of interconnected ASTs.

Whether your marina needs multiple ASTs for diesel and gasoline, or your motor pool needs 10,000 to 20,000 gallons of fuel storage for your fleet of trucks or buses, TEC can assist. Perhaps your small business needs only 500 gallons of heating oil for your facility, TEC can help with that as well.

If you are upgrading your existing fueling system, we can also remove and dispose of that system in conjunction with the installation of your new AST system.

Collaborative Project Managers

Each AST system installation, and site, is unique. Our PMs understand this and often provide valuable input that helps our clients create a better overall system.

How AST Installation Works

TEC follows a time-tested process for our AST installations, however, each site is unique, presenting various challenges and designs.

In the preliminary stage, we coordinate with the client on a schedule with an anticipated start date, followed by submittal data, permitting, and any notifications to local jurisdictions or environmental agencies.

Once the site utilities are marked and cleared, we mobilize to your site and stage equipment to initiate the work. If an existing AST is being replaced, the removal and site demolition occur next. In the installation phase, TEC delivers the tank and its accessories on-site and preps the area (concrete pads, grading, etc.).

Tank accessories often include:

  • Spill and overfill protection
  • Level probes
  • Leak sensors
  • Automatic tank gauging

Following installation, we conduct client training on the new system during start-up. We finalize your project with a walk-through to address punch list items you may have and provide any final installation documentation.

How to Set Up AST Installation or Removal with TEC

Step 1:

Reach out to us via phone, email, or our contact form to get the process started.

Step 2:

Our sales & estimating team will reach out to determine your precise needs and typically conduct an in-person site visit to understand your site-specific demands.

Step 3:

Our team will provide you with a comprehensive quote to review, including a plan that outlines all the work to be completed.

Step 4:

Most jurisdictions require permitting for an AST installation project by either the local fire marshal or building inspector, but not necessarily for an AST removal. TEC can easily determine when a permit is necessary. Work can commence once all parties have agreed on the scope of work, pricing, and terms & conditions.

AST Installation & Removal FAQ

  • Aboveground storage tanks can be subject to local, state, or federal regulations. Contact TEC to learn more.

  • Both the EPA and state environmental regulatory bodies have documented thousands of leaks, spills, and overfills associated with AST systems. These releases can threaten human health and safety, in addition to the environment.

  • There are several criteria to determine if your facility is subject to the SPCC Rule genera. In general, it applies to facilities whose total aggregate capacity of aboveground oil storage containers is greater than 1,320 gallons (excluding containers less than 55 gallons), or the total aggregate capacity of USTs is greater than 42,000 gallons.
