Underground Storage Tank (UST)
Installation & Removal

Underground storage tanks, or USTs, are those that have at least 10% of their volume beneath the ground’s surface. They’re typically constructed of either steel or aluminum, composite materials like fiberglass or carbon fiber, or a composite-metal hybrid.

The standard volume of a UST varies upon its application but can range from a few hundred gallons to 500,000+ gallons. For example, a corner gas station might have three or four 10,000-gallon USTs adjacent to the pumps/dispensers and canopy area, whereas a marina or small contractor’s yard might have one or two 500-gallon USTs to fuel their fleets.

How Underground Storage Tank Installation Works

A new tank or UST system installation starts with a design tailored to meet the needs of the facility. As with any construction project, the design can be straightforward, or as complex as needed to meet the demands of the system. Replacing an existing tank system further entails the removal of the old UST system (tanks, dispensers, piping runs) before installing the new one. Once the design is vetted and approved, permits must be acquired through the local jurisdiction (building, demolition, fire marshal), along with ordering materials and clearing utilities.

How UST Removal Works

Our team begins by coordinating a start date with the owner or owner’s representative. After which we will provide advance notice to relevant authorities (jurisdiction-specific) and obtain local building and/or fire marshal permits. Then, we deliver product submittal data (if required by a government entity) and notify local utility service(s) to mark underground lines, pipes, and other hazards.

Once project coordination and documentation are complete and submitted we begin on-site work, which includes:

  • Mobilize on-site, secure work areas, and staging/stockpiling locations
  • Excavate to the top of the tank(s)
  • Cut accessway at the tank’s top
  • Pump out residual waste fuel from USTs and dispose at an approved facility
  • Clean, purge, and rinse the USTs
  • Render UST free of hazardous vapors before cutting, removing, etc.
  • Disconnect tank top accessories
  • Excavate and remove tanks

After excavation, our crew performs the following:

  • Soil sample collection per state or local jurisdiction
  • Inspection coordination following the project work permit
  • Backfill excavation with suitable fill material, compacted as required
  • Prepare a UST removal report complete with disposal manifests, analytical sampling results, maps, photos, etc.

UST Installation & Removal FAQ

  • The EPA, state, and/or local jurisdictions regulate tanks to prevent them from releasing harmful chemicals into the environment, contributing to human health issues and polluting the environment.

  • The time needed to install a tank or tank system varies based on many factors. In general, you can expect an installation to be dependent upon the availability of a new UST. If the tank manufacturer has your specific tank in stock, then the process is only limited to permit acquisition, scheduling, and weather.

  • If we discover contaminated soil or evidence of a release, we will need to address it to comply with the permit and/or state regulations. This may involve removing soil or free liquids during the removal, stockpiling contaminated soil, pumping out groundwater, or remediating the site later on.
